Philae

Philae
The island of Philae was the centre for worship of the goddess Isis, and the Temple of Isis is the most important and largest on the island. The building of the High Dam threatened to completely submerge the island so, between 1972-80, the temples and monuments of Philae were dismantled stone by stone and re-built on the higher Aglika Island.

You'll get the chance to look around the Temple of Isis, the Temple of Hathor, Hadrian's Gate, the Birth House of Ptolemy IV, the Kiosk of Trajan and the Temple of Augustus.

The Unfinished Obelisk

High Dam & Unfinished Obelisk
The High Dam took ten years to construct and was finished in 1970. This great piece of engineering made floods in the Nile valley a thing of the past and saved Egypt from drought and famine. Visitors get a fantastic view from on top of the dam over Lake Nasser to Kalabsha Temple in the south and the huge power station to the north.

After visiting the High Dam you'll be taken to see the Unfinished Obelisk. If finished, this obelisk would have been the highest erected and would have weighed in at over 1,000 tons. The obelisk was being carved directly out of the bedrock and the underneath is still attached.

The Great Temple of Rameses II   Abu Simbel
The Great Temple of Rameses II and the Temple of Hathor in Abu Simbel offer some of the most impressive and magnificent sights in Egypt. The entrances to both temples were carved into the mountain side, although today the temples aren't in their original locations as the building of the High Dam in Aswan, and the subsequent creation of Lake Nasser, meant the temples had to be moved to higher ground.
