Details on the Holes

Madinat Makadi is a desert style golf course designed to accommodate the highest caliber international Championships.  With over seventy-five hundred yards (7,500 yds) from the Championship tees, this course will challenge the best players in the world.

The course has also been designed with six sets of tees to accommodate all levels of golfers from beginners to touring professionals. Each hole at Madinat Makadi is strategically designed with risk/reward shot-making opportunities through the course. The front nine is distinctly different than the back nine, being flatter with a series of ponds and creeks to challenge the golfer, whereas the back nine is routed through the hills and wadiis in the desert. The challenge on the back nine is due to the natural topography that was utilized in the design.

The overall golf experience at Madinat Makadi is designed to challenge the best golfers while allowing the average players and beginners to enjoy their day on the course.

Hole-by Hole Commentary

Hole #1

Medium length Par 4, the tee shot should be placed on the left side of the fairway in order to gain the best position and angle to the green.  The green is simply contoured to allow the players to start off with a good score.

Hole #2

Long Par 5, tee shot should favor the right side of the fairway, giving the golfer the best angle for his/her approach to the second landing area. Second landing area is split, the second shot should be placed in on the left side approach to the green, allowing for a straightforward third shot to an undulating green that falls away in the back.

Hole #3

Short length Par 4, with a heroic tee shot opportunity. If the player can carry the bunker complex on the right, this will give them a kick down the hill very close to the green with a short second shot.  If this tee shot is hit to the left, it will typically end up in the left bunker, creating a difficult second shot to this green.

Hole #4

Long Par 3, open at the front to allow the running shot to access the green.  The green also has some support mounds that will help contain the ball on the putting surface.

Hole #5

Long Par 4, heading into the prevailing wind. The fairway is split by a bunker with the preferred side on the left which will give the player the shortest second shot and best angle to the green. A tee shot to the right will create a longer shot with more difficult angle over the right greenside bunker. This green also has significant undulation making the fifth hole the #1 handicap hole.

Hole #6

Medium length Par 4, the tee shot faces water on the left and a large bunker complex on the right.  The best tee shot challenges the left side of the fairway and water to put the player in the best position for the second shot to the green. Second shot will require a carry over the creek, there is an approach on the left that allows the player to run the ball into this putting surface.

Hole #7

Medium length Par 3, water on the left challenging the player with plenty of bailout on the right. Should the player miss to the right it is a difficult chip-shot into this undulating green.

Hole #8

Par 4 with a lake on the right, the best tee shot is to the right side challenging the water. This will give the golfer a good kick down towards the green resulting in a shorter second shot.  Should the player hit the ball to the left, they will find themselves in the left fairway bunker for a longer more difficult shot to the green.  This green also has plenty of undulations to challenge the player once they arrive on the putting surface.

Hole #9

Reachable Par 5 for the better players, the proper tee shot is played over the left fairway bunker complex. This gives the golfer a good view to the green from the left side of the fairway and an opportunity to hit the green in two. The green is shallow with bunkers in front, so the player can go for the green or play up the right side and have a simple chip shot onto the green.

Hole #10

Uphill Par 4, the tee shot is to be placed on the left side of the fairway giving the player a good angle to this green. The green is elevated so a high approach shot has a better chance to hold the green.

Hole #11

Short downhill drivable Par 4, the preferred tee shot is down the right side of the fairway, over the right bunker. If hit properly the tee shot will carry over the hill and run down towards the green, although blind, this is potentially drivable and a birdie hole for many players.

Hole #12

Plays along the large wadii on the left with hills on the right, the preferred tee shot is up the right side just over the right bunker to the high side of the landing area. From the right side of the landing area the player has a better angle and shorter distance into the green.  The green is sloped from right to left.  Should the tee shot be hit to the left side of the fairway, the player will have an uphill second shot with a more difficult angle into this green.

Hole #13

Long Par 5, with a heroic tee shot over the right side fairway bunker, this will put the player in position with a kick forward to potentially hit their second shot over the desert area on the left and give themselves the position for their third shot.  If played to the right on their second shot the golfer will have a difficult third shot over the front bunker to the shallow green.

Hole #14

Long Par 3, plays a little uphill to a large green that slopes from back to front, this hole favors a running shot moving from left to right into the putting surface.

Hole #15

Short Par 4, plays downhill in the wadii with containment on both sides.  If the tee shot is played over the left bunker, it will kick down with very short second shot to the green. Another birdie hole!

Hole #16

Medium length Par 3, playing downhill with a bunker complex on the left that protects the back left of the green.  This shot must be struck solidly in order to keep the wind from moving the ball to the right and down into the hollow.

Hole #17

Uphill Par 4, into the prevailing wind making it a difficult Par. If the tee shot is struck solidly it should carry the ridge that runs through the fairway and will give the player some extra distance off the tee allowing them to hit a middle iron into this green which is protected on the right side by a bunker.  The best position off the tee favors the left side of the fairway.

Hole #18

Finishing hole is a dramatic Par 5 that is reachable in two shots by many players.  The favored tee shot here is over the left side bunker complex.  This will give the golfer the best position and the most roll off the tee. If the tee shot is missed to the right this will lengthen the hole and make the second shot more difficult due to the bunker complex on the right.  The green is also set behind the bunker complex on the left and slopes away from the player, so the third shot must be carefully struck to hold the green. The golf course offers many fantastic views of the Red Sea but none better than the eighteenth with the clubhouse and hotel in the foreground.
