Petra

Petra is Jordan’s most famous attraction, a ‘lost city’ carved from red rock over 2,000 years ago and only recently rediscovered by the Swiss explorer Burkhardt. Petra is a truly magical place, home to awe-inspiring structures such as the Treasury (of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade fame) and the Monastery, among many.

From your first glimpse of the Treasury as you walk or horseride through the Siq, the narrow, winding gorge that is the entry to Petra, your imagination will be captured by this magical city built by the Nabataeans centuries ago, and once important as a junction for the trade routes linking Rome, Arabia, Egypt, China, Syria and Greece.

There's plenty to explore within Petra itself, but you may wish to spend a few extra days in the area to explore other sites such as the beautiful Ottoman village of Dana, renowned for its views and flora & fauna, and the castle at Shobak, one of the most important Crusader castles in the region.

Petra can also be visited on a day trip from Taba, Sharm, Nuweiba, Dahab and Eilat.

Flights

Petra is serviced by flights to either Amman (approx 3 hour transfer) or Aqaba (approx 90 min transfer).

How to Book

To visit Petra, it's best to fly into Amman and transfer to Petra via the King's Highway, which will allow you to visit Madaba, Mount Nebo and Kerak on the way, if you choose. You can either visit Petra on its own or as part of a multi-centre holiday or guided tour, both of which need to be booked through our specialist reseverations team.

You may otherwise choose to book hotel accommodation alone (without flights), which can be booked online or through reservations - though as many hotels are on request, we recommend calling reservations for all available options on 020 8418 2525.
