ASWAN is
Egypt’s southern capital and a refreshing change to other
places. Pleasantly warm in winter and more bearable than elsewhere
in summer, Aswan has a more relaxed atmosphere yet also offers
plenty of historical interest. Ancient sites such as the Temple
of Philae and the unfinished obelisk are complimented by the modern
Aswan High Dam. The breathtaking temples of Abu Simbel are accessible
from Aswan, and well worth the effort.Alternatively, stroll through
the town and take in the beauty of the Nile.

Aswan’s
most famous hotel was built in 1899 and occupies a prime location
on a bluff overlooking the Nile. Its architecture, a combination
of Edwardian and Moorish styles, inspired Agatha Christie to write
‘Death on the Nile’. The famous ‘1902’ restaurant,
designed in a Moorish style, serves French and international cuisine.
Other dining options include American buffet breakfasts and varied
cuisines throughout the day, plus elegant afternoon teas on the
terrace, with impressive views of the Nile. The gardens include a
swimming pool and tennis courts and stretch down to the Nile, where
Feluccas moor. |
